City Hall has purchased more than 30 iPads that will be used to help APD fight crime, officials say.

Police Chief Ray Schultz said Monday the devices — which have cost the city $19,500 so far — have been used to replace laptops and could be an integral part of the department at some point.

Video conferences and the ability to share pictures (of a suspect, for example) on a large screen are immediate benefits, he said. The small size, price and portability are also assets, he said. In other words, police departments like the iPad for the same reasons consumers do. “Law enforcement across the country is starting to look at this,” Schultz said. The uses could expand as new applications are developed, he said. Schultz envisions a day when an officer can use the iPad to shoot pictures, record video and audio, and bundle it all together with a police report that can be emailed immediately to a victim.

Translation and transcription applications might be useful, too, he said, and the iPad could replace the laptops in police cars.

At this point, the deployment of iPads is still being tested, Schultz said.

Police executives, the gang and homicide units, public information officers and criminalistics experts have iPads now.

“We feel very comfortable with the additional functionality that they provide,” Schultz said.

Don’t be distracted by the phone

Submitted by:
Sgt. Glenn A. Zier, Clay Co. (FL) SO

Turn off or ignore your cell phones. Officers responding Code 3 to a call have been seen talking on their phone on the way to the call. Who are the talking to, their funeral director?

How about the officer who gets out of the car with the Bluetooth in his ear? What are you thinking? Who is so important that you have to be instantly available? I can not think of one single person in the world who is so important that I have to be ready to answer the phone the minute they call. The cell phone is one of the greatest innovations to civilization but perhaps one of the most detrimental distractions to law enforcement. Officers don’t have to make decisions, they can call a Sgt. They can talk all the way to the shooting call. They can answer the phone while checking a building. They don’t have to get out of their car and go into a convience store and talk to the local cleark (who, by the way, is a fount of information) in order to use the phone to call a citizen.

Look at the cell phone as another tool and use it accordingly.

The iPhone application has a black background with with white text, this helps and eliminates the loss of night vision during night time operations. It also has a day time display for day shift officers. The third screen helps you translate the warnings from english to spanish. There is also a link to Google Translate. Touch the link and type out what you want to say in english and it translate it to spanish. (Great resource). No longer fumble looking for your miranda card!

There is no need for a flashlight to read a miranda warning ever again! These are the latest miranda warnings established by the U.S. Supreme Court. Just pull out your iPhone or iPod touch and with one push of a button there it is!

About

The most technologically advanced and convenient way to document, photograph, search and share all aspects of your law enforcement contacts directly to your iPhone. Field Contact is the most convenient way to document, save and send your field contact information. Field Contact makes it simple to enter all pertinent I.D. information directly to your iPhone: names, addresses, vehicle information, aliases, location of incident, etc… with advanced search features to recall stored contacts. Rather than fumble with a pen and notepad, or worry about remembering to take your camera out in the field with you that day, simply use Field Contact as the perfect tool to digitally capture all aspects of your contact.

Application Details

Add new contacts with numerous law enforcement specific data fields.

Specific data fields have predefined options allowing the user to scroll to their desired choice. Information can be entered quicker and easier.

Miscellaneous fields in the physical description, vehicle and stop locations for user defined information.

The ability to enter multiple vehicles, scars, marks or tattoos, subject related locations and stop locations.

Add photos and enlarge the photos for in-field recognition

Send an entire contact to another Field Contact user. The contact is automatically added to their database.

Email an entire contact to any email address, including photographs.

Search every data field, including partial searches.

Passcode required for security.

About

The South Carolina Implied Consent and SFST’s App is designed to help South Carolina law enforcement officers during their investigations of DUI, OVWI and DWI’s. It’s also intended to refresh officers’ skills and memory of the specific National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) procedural standards.

No more having both hands full holding a flashlight and card.

No more need for a flashlight to read Implied Consent.

No more trying to find your card to read from.

This App has the South Carolina Implied consent read by law enforcement.
When the App opens it is set for those officers working at night. With a black background and white text it reduces the loss of sight at night.
There is also a setting for those officers working during day light hours.

This App also has the NHTSA Standard Field Sobriety Test’s (SFST’s)
Each test is spelled out from start to finish and includes the specific clues to look for established by the NHTSA and the number of clues each test takes to fail.

A .08 chart is also included.

New to our Implied Consent apps is the always hard to find when you need it, NHTSA DUI Manual. Touch the “More” tab and the manual comes up in a convenient PDF format right there on your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. This is an invaluable resource for preparing for court or to just refresh your knowledge.

I made this App and others like it for my fellow brothers and sisters in law enforcement. My hope is that these Apps will make doing our jobs just a bit more convenient and assist us in our safety during roadside investigations.

Special thanks to Chris Robinson.

This is an invaluable resource for preparing for court or to just refresh your knowledge.

I made this App and others like it for my fellow brothers and sisters in law enforcement. My hope is that these Apps will make doing our jobs just a bit more convenient and assist us in our safety during roadside investigations.

About

This App is the Implied Consent Warning Card and a universal Field Sobriety Test instructions which are given by tens of thousands police officers in the United States every day. Also included for officers are the clues for each test and the number of clues to fail each test.

Walk and Turn

One leg Stand

Also includes a .08 Chart, which allows people to see how each drink effects their blood alcohol level. The chart shows a drink count, per hour, which allows individuals to know how much they can drink before going over .08

Finally there is no more trying to find the card in your notebook or wallet. You don’t need a flashlight to read the Implied Consent Card at night! It’s store right on your iPod Touch or iPhone. One push of the icon and a night time display of the Implied Consent Card is right there! Push on the “Field Test Instructions” button and it gives you step by step instructions
